New Mom Fitness Tips

As a new mom you will want to get back into your pre-birth clohes. That is not as hard as it seems if you will follow a few simple steps. Since you and the baby will be spending lots of quality time together here are a few exercises that you can do together.

Walking

moms-exerciseWalking is an easy and natural way to burn calories and get your body moving again and you can take the baby in a stroller. In fact whole new industries have grown up around new babies, new moms and strollers.

Take it easy for the first few weeks. You have been growing more inactive as your baby grew and you need to ease back into more activity. Consult your doctor about walking and other exercises you can safely do for the
first few weeks as a new Mom.

Do Squats, Sliding Lunges and Wheel Touches

Short walks are best for now and later longer walks. Intersperse walking, with the stroller, and stopping to do shallow squats while facing the baby. Baby wants to see you often and doing squats in front of the stroller allows you to interact with your newborn.

Walk for a few more minutes and this time when you stop do toe touches, or stroller touches, while facing the baby.

stroller-workoutWalk for a while doing sliding lunges. When I was a kid I used to pretend to be a train and this is the same movement, set to stroller. This one is done by slowing sliding you right foot forward keeping your left leg strait and in place. Bending your right knee as it moves forward. This uses the muscles in the right thigh while stretching the muscles in your left leg. Do this slowly at first and not too far. Now repeat by sliding your left leg forward. Move along in sliding lunges until you begin to feel it and then walk for a few minutes.

You can do this alone or with other moms with whom you can talk and share as you enjoy your day. Repeat these three movements as you go and on occassion you can remove your baby from the stroller and dance slow circles to your favorite slow music. In you head, or from your earphones.

Along with easing back into physical activity you should eat a well balanced diet with an emphasis on Fruits and Vegetables. If you need to eat, eat an apple or orange or banana. All are good for you and you can eat as many as you like with no danger of it going to your waist.

As you get stronger you may want to ask your doctor if you could jog? They even make jogging strollers now, like this one Baby Jogger City Elite Single Stroller, Black Sport.  Most important is to get moving. Do it gradually. Allow your body to wake up naturally and become alive to its returning strength and flexibility. Have fun, smile, laugh and do it all with the newest member of your family.
